Full Immersion Tar Heel Research Experience

Tar Heel Discovery Program

Save these date on your calendars for an immersive research experience in North Carolina in Raliegh at the state archive with guided research experiences. You will delve deeper into the collections at the North Carolina State Archives and Government & Heritage Library with the assistance of Diane Richard and Victoria Young and the staff at the archives and libraries.

When are the weeklong Tar Heel Discoveries Programs?

  1. April 15-20
  2. October 14-19, 2018
Who should attend this in-depth research experience?
Seasoned researchers and beginners will benefit from the guided experience with the mentoring from two top researchers familiar with all things North Carolina. If you find yourself saying yes to any of these questions, you would benefit from this research opportunity:
  • Have you ever been frustrated when visiting a new research facility by not knowing how to find, request and obtain document copies?
  • When you find a record of your ancestor, do you ever wonder how to best interpret the context and meaning of the found reference? Or wonder what might be the best “next steps” in your research?
  • Do you wish you had a “research buddy” to exchange ideas and share new discoveries?
  • Need to delve into unconventional records because you’ve come to a “brick wall” and don’t know how or which ones to consult?

I know I said yes to every one of these questions! Unfortunately, Andy and I don’t have Tar Heel relatives. Mine are primarily from Franklin County, Ohio, so I would seriously consider taking the journey to Columbus if such an experience were available like this one in North Carolina.

North Carolina Genealogy Research Experience
There are full-service experiences, half-day, or single-day experiences if you’re unable to attend the full week. There is also an option to have a research review by Diane and Victoria prior to your arrival so they can give you a “Who Do You Think You Are?” experience by discovering leads for you in advance!

  1. My husband has lots of North Carolina ancestors. What a neat idea! I'll have to consider it. Have you found anything like this program in other states?
